La tecnología está permitiendo nuevas formas de cooperación. El mundo del software libre ha mostrado cómo una comunidad puede coordinarse y cooperar de formas no tradicionales, por encima de barreras geográficas, corporativas e incluso de interés. El mundo de la cultura libre está mostrando capacidades y posibilidades parecidas, aunque en un entorno más amplio. Y desde hace tiempo otras muchas comunidades de experiencia están explorando mecanismos de colaboración similares.
